In addition to the sale itself, your specialist dealer provides technical advice, helps you choose the right model for your chimney, and in most cases also handles installation. Expert advice before buying matters a lot with stoves, since heating output, chimney connection and structural conditions all need to line up. Our specialist dealers provide this advice on site. Assembly, the chimney connection and commissioning of an Austroflamm stove are carried out exclusively by our specialist partners. In many countries this isn't just good practice — it's a legal requirement: the stove must be inspected and approved by the responsible chimney sweep before it's used for the first time. Requirements vary by country, so your specialist dealer can tell you exactly what applies where you live, and will usually coordinate this appointment for you.

Tests and emission values

Technical Questions

Across the EU, the harmonised standard DIN EN 16510 sets emission limits for stoves and pellet stoves, and all current Austroflamm models meet these requirements. Some countries apply additional national requirements on top of this — Germany's Bundes-Immissionsschutzverordnung (BImSchV) is one example — and may also offer extra funding for particularly low-emission appliances.

 All current Austroflamm stoves already meet these stricter national limits where they apply, and appliances that met the relevant limits at the time of manufacture keep their grandfathering rights even if regulations are tightened later, with no retrofitting required.

Austroflamm's Xtra stored heat technology is the further development of our patented Heat Memory System. Xtra delivers stored heat for up to 12 hours, while the Heat Memory System provides up to 8 hours.

Both systems extend heat output after the fire itself has burned down — they differ in storage duration, weight and retrofittability.

At Austroflamm, the Heat Memory System and Xtra stored heat are built directly onto the stove body itself, so heat transfers straight from the firebox shell into the storage material rather than through a separate component. Both systems also feature high-density storage material — per cubic centimetre, they store more heat than many other storage solutions on the market.

Yes, the patented Heat Memory System can be installed in a suitable stove after purchase. Your specialist dealer can tell you whether your particular model qualifies, based on the product line and the existing firebox.

No, Xtra stored heat cannot be retrofitted. This comes down to how it's built: stoves with Xtra stored heat are constructed from the ground up with over 100 kg of permanently integrated storage material, which can't be added to an existing stove body afterwards.

If you'd still like to extend the heat storage of a stove you already own, the retrofittable Heat Memory System is a good alternative.

A pellet stove runs fully automatically and doesn't need manual refuelling during operation:

 

  1. Temperature, heating output, and start/end times are set in advance (on the appliance or via app)
  2. Pellets are transported automatically from the hopper to the firebox
  3. Ignition happens automatically, as does air supply control
  4. Once the set room temperature is reached, the stove switches off on its own

This automated process makes pellet stoves considerably more convenient to operate than classic wood-burning stoves.

All Austroflamm pellet stoves and hybrid stoves are app-enabled; classic stoves burning only firewood are not, since their combustion air is regulated manually.

 

What app control lets you do:

  • Remotely control start time, temperature and end time from your smartphone or tablet
  • Ignite pellet and hybrid stoves remotely
  • Track room temperature via the Austroflamm Smart Spot wireless room sensor, connected via Bluetooth
  • Read and adjust temperature directly on your smartphone

On pure firewood stoves, air is instead regulated manually using the air control on the appliance.

A room-air-independent stove draws its combustion air not from the room it's installed in, but through a sealed intake duct directly from outside. This matters most in well-insulated new builds, where natural air exchange is limited.

 

  • Certification basis: DIN 18897, marked "CA" under the DIN EN 16510 standard
  • Typical use: low-energy and passive houses
  • Advantage: no conflict with kitchen extractor hoods or controlled home ventilation systems, which can otherwise create negative pressure

The flue gas triple value is used by the chimney sweep to calculate the correct chimney cross-section, and consists of three individual measurements:

 

  • Flue gas temperature (°C)
  • Flue gas mass flow (g/s)
  • Draught pressure at nominal heat output (Pa)

You'll find all three values in your Austroflamm stove's user manual — they're the basis for correctly sizing the chimney connection.

Every Austroflamm stove supplies combustion air through two separate paths:

 

  • Primary air (under-air): unheated fresh air, usually fed in from below to the fuel, mainly relevant during ignition
  • Secondary air (upper air): pre-heated air, fed in at the top of the combustion chamber, supplies combustion air during the burn phase and helps keep the viewing glass clean

Once the wood is burning well, primary air can be reduced while secondary air takes over ongoing combustion.

  • A continuous-burning stove is approved for use with coal, though it can also be fired with wood or briquettes. An appliance counts as a continuous-burning stove if it can keep coal embers going for up to 8 hours without refuelling — the term refers to the minimum burn time of the embers, not the total operating time.
  • A batch-burning stove is a classic wood-burning stove. The maximum burn duration per load is stated in the relevant operating manual.

Convection heat is warm air, heated directly by the stove, that rises and is released into the room through the convection opening.

Radiant heat doesn't warm the air but rather objects and people in the room directly, mostly released through the viewing glass — most people find it especially cosy, since it resembles the warmth of sunlight.

Most stoves combine both types of heat, in a ratio that depends on the specific model and construction.

A chimney creates negative pressure in the firebox as warm exhaust air rises, drawing in the combustion air needed for the fire to burn at all. Without this draught, no stove or pellet stove will run reliably.

 

  • Function: creates the necessary draught pressure
  • Requirement for good combustion: the chimney and stove need to be technically matched, ideally checked in advance by the chimney sweep

Important to know: a pellet stove needs a continuous power supply for combustion and generally cannot run at all during a power cut.

A hybrid stove can still be used in firewood mode without power — but this emergency mode isn't meant for permanent use; it's a way to bridge the gap until power returns and you can switch back to electric mode. If you want reliable, power-independent heating even during outages, a classic stove or a hybrid stove running on firewood is your best option.

 

For hybrid stoves specifically:

  • Short power cut: the stove automatically resumes its previous settings once power returns
  • Longer power cut: the stove needs to be restarted manually once power returns
  • Pure firewood stoves without electronics aren't affected by a power cut at all and keep running independently

Use and Care

    • Mandatory step: chimney sweep approval before first use
    • Recommendation: light your first fire with a small amount of dry wood, to gently cure the paint finish
    • Take it slow at first: the Keramott firebox lining retains some residual moisture from manufacturing, which needs to evaporate slowly during the first few fires — heating up too quickly can shorten the Keramott's lifespan

      Before first use, your stove must be inspected and approved by the responsible chimney sweep — a legal requirement in many countries. Only after this approval may the stove be used regularly.

Regular maintenance significantly extends your stove's lifespan. You can handle the following yourself:

 

  • Regularly clearing ash from the interior
  • Visually checking door seals for wear or cracks
  • Cleaning the viewing glass with a suitable glass cleaner

Because of their electronics and feed mechanisms, pellet and hybrid stoves need regular professional servicing, regardless of how many hours they've been used.

 

  • Service interval: once the model-specific operating hours are reached, at least once a year
  • Why annual service matters: it's required to maintain your warranty
  • Recommendation: ask your specialist dealer about a service contract for automatic annual appointments

Native hardwoods are the best choice, since they have a high energy value and burn steadily with long-lasting embers.

Softwoods such as spruce or pine, by contrast, are more resinous, burn faster and tend to spark more. In return, they produce a particularly long, lively flame. They're a good addition to your main fuel, but less advisable on their own, given their shorter burn time and higher spark risk.

From an environmental perspective, firewood from local, sustainably managed forests is especially advantageous: short transport distances further reduce the carbon footprint, and controlled forestry with targeted reforestation ensures that, over the long term, no more wood is harvested than regrows. Looking for regional origin and a recognised sustainability label (such as PEFC or FSC) is a good rule of thumb when buying firewood.

For clean, efficient combustion, firewood needs to be dry and untreated. These practical figures help:

 

  • Maximum diameter of split wood: 7 cm
  • Round logs should be split at least once through the middle so they catch fire more easily
  • Recommended wood types: native hardwoods such as beech, oak or ash
  • Storage: dry, airy and protected from moisture — wet wood burns poorly, produces less heat and more smoke

Rule of thumb for drying time: firewood should be air-dried for at least 1 to 2 years before use.

Pellets are made from sawmill by-products such as sawdust and wood shavings, compressed into a dense, standardised fuel.

Production steps at a glance:

 

  1. Drying the damp sawdust (usually using energy from burning bark)
  2. Mixing in a small amount of starch as a binder
  3. Compressing under high pressure through a die into cylindrical pellets

Keeping pellets completely dry during storage is essential, since moisture causes them to swell and reduces their combustion quality.

Proper care ensures your stove's longevity and follows a clear schedule:

 

  • At least once a year: check the stove, flue gas paths and smoke pipes for deposits
  • Before the heating season: check door seals for fit, wear and cracks, and replace if needed
  • Regularly, as required by local regulations: chimney inspection and cleaning by the chimney sweep
  • Ongoing: remove ash from the firebox
  • Once a year: a thorough deep clean of the whole appliance

For efficient heating and a soot-free look, clean your stove thoroughly at least once a year (before or after the heating season), once it has cooled down sufficiently.

 

Cleaning by component:

  • Body: clean painted surfaces only with a dry or slightly damp cloth, since cleaning agents can damage the special paint finish; stainless steel surfaces need special cleaners available from your specialist dealer
  • Interior: remove ash with a shovel and hand brush, or a dedicated ash vacuum
  • Viewing glass: use a stove-specific glass cleaner and a clean cloth or kitchen paper; avoid abrasive products

Once soot has set, it's difficult to remove — so regular cleaning pays off more than occasional cleaning.

During airwash, pre-heated secondary air is directed along the inside of the stove's glass pane in a targeted way. This airflow stops soot particles from settling on the glass, keeping your view of the flame clear even at full load.

 

  • How it works: pre-heated air forms a protective "air film" on the inside of the glass
  • Effect: the glass stays clear for longer, meaning less manual cleaning

The right choice depends less on budget than on your daily routine and habits:

Switching fuel principles later on (for example, from pure firewood to pellet operation) isn't technically possible with a permanently installed stove, since the firebox construction differs. If you'd like to keep this flexibility open, consider a hybrid stove at the time of purchase — it combines both fuels in a single appliance.

Sustainability and Climate-Neutral Heating

Wood and wood pellets are considered a CO2-neutral fuel, since burning them releases only as much CO2 as the tree previously absorbed from the atmosphere while growing. This depends on sustainable forestry, where regrowing trees close the carbon cycle.

 

Both fuels are CO2-neutral, but differ in production, transport and combustion efficiency.

In practice, firewood's particulate emissions depend heavily on correct handling, while pellet stoves achieve consistently low emissions through automated combustion.

Stoves that met the emission limits in force at the time they were manufactured may continue to be used even if regulations are later tightened, without needing to be retrofitted. This applies to all current Austroflamm models, which already meet today's stricter limits.
