Experts at the German Biomass Research Centre (DBFZ) estimate the total heating output of these installations at 80 to 100 gigawatts — roughly equivalent to the secured capacity of the German power grid. This decentralized reserve already exists; it doesn't need to be built first.

Another advantage: cordwood can be stored for years, while pellets and briquettes can be stored for many months. This makes it easy to build up a stockpile that is immediately available in an emergency.
